Toccoa River Fly Fishing
Experience authentic Blue Ridge Mountain trout fishing below the Blue Ridge Dam in the lower river, located just 90 miles north of Atlanta. This picturesque stretch offers breathtaking scenery, featuring rhododendron-lined banks and exposed rocky cliffs, making it the perfect mountain getaway. If you’re staying in Blue Ridge or seeking that pure mountain fishing experience, this section of the river is highly recommended.
The river offers 15 miles of prime trout habitat, flowing through both public and private properties. Some of the best waters can only be accessed by drift boat or fishing raft, providing a more exclusive fishing experience. Managed by the TVA, this tailwater benefits from professional flow management, which helps protect the aquatic life and ensures consistent hatches throughout the season.
Many property owners along this stretch maintain fish feeders, providing additional nutrients that help the trout grow quickly and stay healthy. The wild rainbow and brown trout here thrive in the clear, cold waters of the Toccoa system, resulting in stunningly vibrant fish with vivid colors.
Whether you’re a beginner looking to catch your first trout or an experienced angler seeking technical challenges, we tailor the experience to your needs. From teaching the basics to targeting trophy browns with streamers, your trip will be customized to exceed your expectations. The right setup, including 9ft 5wt or 6wt rods and 9-foot 3x leaders, will ensure success as we guide you to some of the most productive fishing in the region.
Target Species
The Toccoa River is a year-round trout fishery.
Brown Trout
Brown trout are the apex predators in these waters. Our browns naturally reproduce and live in the cold-water section below the Blue Ridge Dam. This section holds optimal temperatures year-round. Once they reach about 15 inches, their primary food source is smaller rainbow trout! The average size we see is around 12 inches.
Rainbow Trout
This rainbow trout fishery has some natural reproduction but is primarily stocked fish. The Toccoa benefits from prolific bug hatches, which help support the rainbow trout populations in this stretch of the river.
Where We Fish
A typical day has us floating 9 miles on a full-day trip. We usually move from one hole to the next, thoroughly working fish-holding spots in a beautiful setting. For beginner trips, we start on land, practicing casting, hooksets, and other techniques before we embark on the water.
What's Included
Enjoy a comfortable trip in a clean, well-maintained drift boat. A delicious lunch, soft drinks, bottled water, and snacks are included with each full-day trip. Snacks, soft drinks, and bottled water are also provided for half-day trips.
A typical full-day trip starts at 7:00 or 8:00 AM. We will cover 6 to 9 miles of river per trip. Traveling in a motorized drift boat, we can move efficiently upstream and downstream to put you on the most productive sections of the river.
